I am all for extreme MPG vehicles , but I just wanted to beat Jay Leno on this one.

Just think of the money you will save on funeral costs, if you die in this thing, you can use it as a coffin and be buried in it.

The semi joke brings up the problem, its not that these small cars are supper dangerous on their own, its the mix, of ultra small cars and large vehicles on the same roads.

I know its a long shot, but some cities could have policies that only allow these type vehicles in downtown streets,  the only chance of this happening would probably be after peak oil. when that happens, people will start really buying these type cars for commuting. and cities will start doing things to make roads safer for those owners.

No, you'll be sued for discrimination.  The poor can't afford anything except cheaper large cars, so you'll get accusations that you hate hispanics, blacks, etc.

How bout no cars allowed at all in the most congested parts of a city?  If everyone were on bikes or foot it would be very safe. 

Some cities have a fee that you have to pay in order to drive around in them (the bridges to manhattan, stockholm), and it works to reduce the number of cars.  I think that's fantastic and will become more common soon. 

I think we're coming to a critical mass in urban population density that will force people to give up some of their "rights" in order for the air to be breathable and the streets to be navigable. 

Truly poor urban people are not car owners.  They use public transportation. 

We use a rebuilt electric Porsche as our going-to-town-13-miles-in-any-weather vehicle (crash-tested and insured like any other car), our hybrid human-electric trikes in nice weather, our electric tractor for work around the homestead, a recycled 2001 Prius for long distance trips, and walking otherwise. Works for us, and the home PV system charges everything off-grid. Best not to cut butter with a chainsaw.

Wow! Just think of the milage you could get if one of these converted to a pee powered pod car. Just sayin.... :

VWs' latest version is a two seater electric/diesel hybrid that gets over 300mpg. Hats off to somebody truly pushing the envelope. Most car makers are crying
" 50 mpg ? It's too hard -waaa waaa". Do people want 300mpg enough to buy it ? They probably will when it hits $5 a gallon. $6 ?

If you had a monopoly on energy, would you want high efficiency?

Is it truely too negative to point out that we are already paying MORE than $6.oo per gal u.s. when we add in Oil Co.s tax write offs and increased cost of health care ?
