I apologize if I missed this information requested in the thread, but I'm brand spanking new to permaculture and EVERYTHING is learning experience.
I have some dead and dying oaks, red and white, in my suburban lot. I recently started reading about hugelkultur and would like to establish a bed or rwo. My house is serviced by a private water company and the expense of watering in South Texas to maintain traditional garden bed is more than what I want to spend. I'm on 2 acres so I think I could start a bed or two of sufficient size to handle all the dead oak wood. First, can oak be used? What are the problems with using oak? What about "fresh", i.e. recently dead or mostly dead vice "old" wood, has been dead for a few years? Does it make a different on which to use? The hugelkultur beds would be oak base with possible some cedar added, if oak can be used.
Thanks for any and all responses.
