With all the talk of metal never lasting in the burn tunnel or the heat riser, then how long can the top of the barrel last? Should it be insulated as well to make it last longer?

That was a very informative response and I thank you for directing me. My plans are the same as yours. This fall I plan on building one out of the dense firebrick I believe to withstand abuse.

If I am building a rmh with a ceramic wool insulated 8" core, what temperatures should I expect? I can get 2300 to 2600 rated brick and beyond from a local provider. I would rather use the 2300 because it is cheaper. Just wondering if anyone has had any problems due to brick failure.
