I read in Jessi Bloom’s “Free Range
Chicken Gardens” that she likes to build a coop on pavers. So, we have this spot that I thought would be great, under our second story deck where there is already a professionally done paver patio with all the drainage and level-ness you could want. Someone on backyardchickens.com pointed out that over time the
poop could go down between the cracks in the pavers and stink really bad.
So, I would rather not need to dismantle the paver patio in the future if that is what will probably happened because a) not really in my skill set to get it that perfectly level again, and b)I think they concreted the end in so the kids couldn’t dismantle it.
I am planning on a system with a coop and also either a
tractor or paddock or free ranging depending on if I am not gone at work/time of the year, but wanted your honest feedback. What would probably happen if I put the coop directly on these pavers? How about with a deep mulch system? I have had pet birds and I get it, they poop a lot. Just wondering if it is pretty likely the poop will get where I can’t get at it to put on the
compost pile.
If any of you have personal
experience with a coop on a paver floor, I would love to hear about that too.
Also, does this location seem ok? I am pretty constrained with where I can put it with suburbia laws and such (needs to be 20 feet from neighboring residences) and this spot at least is more protected from the elements and potential predators of neighborhood dogs than other spots on the lot.
