Yes, I do believe you've nailed it! I'm thinking it's only showed up because the weather's been so weird here this year. No idea if it will stay or not, but since it's considered native, I'll let it be to do as it does.
The smell is quite mild compared to an actual skunk. Apparently if prepared correctly, the seeds are edible but fiddly. I find native Huckleberries difficult
enough to harvest (the ones on our property are quite small), that I think I'll pass on attempting to check on the edibility of Navarretia squarrosa.
