I've been for the last month been transitioning to a more barefoot lifestyle. I love how happy it makes me feel after being self conscious about my feet for nearly all my life. Anty tips for transition

Take it slow. A little bit every day is better than going out too hard and ending up with sore feet. It takes me a few weeks each summer to get my soles back up to leathery goodness.

When walking you need to learn to pay much more attention to where your feet are going. Pebbles, tiny shards of glass, thorns etc... that you would ignore in shoes become an issue.

Place you your feet toes before heel. If you are used to heel striking in shoes this takes a bit of adjustment, and may make your muscles ache.

Once I get my feet into condition I can go all day, over pretty much any terrain. Last summer my best was 8 miles over a rough, rocky coastal path.

Also, avoid hot roads in summer. I have burnt my feet on two occasions - one involved picking pieces of tarmac out of my soles after a particularly ill-advised walk down a road in France on a scorching-hot day.

You can find more comfortable sections to walk on, even on a hot road. White painted lines can be great. Grass verges are good. Even the track where the road is smooth from wheels can be a different temperature from the rest of the same surface.

But generally, yes. In the heat of summer something on your feet can be necessary. Tougher feet does help in the heat, but sometimes you just need to have something between yourself and the hot surface.

Would some of these barefoot shoes help with the getting used to it? I know it wouldn't help toughen the soul of your foot, but it would help your body, bones, and muscles adjust to being flat footed, but would give you some protection while adjusting.

I bought some from Vivo that I was very satisfied with.

Check your pockets for water buffalo. You might need to use this tiny ad until you locate a water buffalo:
