So, White Mulberry is known to be able to grow near Black Walnut trees, because it is immune to the juglone, but Red Mulberry would be killed under those same circumstance because it lacks Morus alba's tolerance. Fair enough. But what I haven't been able to discover, however, is if Black Mulberry can grow near Black Walnut. Does it share White Mulberry's tolerance of juglone, or is it vulnerable like Red Mulberry?

Been a hectic month, so I just now saw this. I' m in western Kentucky, and have a LOT of both trees on my property. In fact, a nice mature black mulberry that fruits nicely is about 50 yards from where I now sit--it's about 16-20" in diameter, with a slightly larger black walnut within 12' of it. Their branches and certainly roots as well intermingle. Several other young mulberries are coming up beneath walnuts, so they appear to do quite well with one another.

I'm refreshing this topic, because it seems that the answer to the question was not given and I feel that replies could refer to black Morus alba that could be called by some people "black mulberry".
Next year I'm going to move my two walnuts on Black walnut rootstock from my orchard to pasture location and in place of walnuts I'm going to plant either Morus nigra or Morus macroura or Crataegus mexicana or Crataegus azarolus.
Does anybody have experience with growing these species close or in place of a Black walnut tree?

re-reading this thread, my experience runs counter to the original post: both red mulberry and black walnut are native in my area and they frequently happily grow in close proximity to each other, with no noticeable ill effect on the mulberries. similarly, we have some mulberries on M. nigra rootstock between walnuts (it’s primarily a nut orchard), and they seem fine with the situation too.

with the hawthorns, our local native ones (not %100 on ID) frequently grow in the shade of black walnut overstory and seem happy enough (though in the shade they don’t fruit much at all). that said, other roseaceae relatives of theirs have definitely struggled from their proximity to walnuts.

no experience with azarole specifically.
