Can anyone share some ideas of how to deter foxes? I had one attack my chickens last sunday in broad daylight. while people were moving about in the garden.

I live in the city so a gun is out of the question.

You could try a live trap. Then relocate that sucker far far far away.

Fencing the chickens in some electric netting would be a solid choice too. That will keep the fox out and very very deterred.

I've got them in a pen, which is pretty safe. its more about when i let them out in the garden. The electric fencing is is too much of an expensive option at the moment.

Can i use any poisons?

Have you sought about a shepperd dog?

i've been thinking about a dog the issue is my wife and my elderly mother who lives with me are absolutely terrified of dogs so i don't want to make life too difficult for them, even if my wife got over her fear i don't think my mother will

I think poison is not a good way to go. You can't control what eats it and you don't want to be responsible for the death of a neighbor's pet. Not to mention that you'll still have issues when the next fox or raccoon moves into the area.

I don't know if it would work but you could also get some other predator urine to spray around. Coyote piss may deter the fox... though I don't know for how long. And who knows you might start attracting coyotes.

that's a good idea, where do you get that kind of thing? i don't think i'm in danger of attracting coyotes we don't have any in england

It's usually available in sporting goods stores in the hunting section. Some farm supply stores sell it. A search for "coyote urine" on amazon returned a number of different options. So it's pretty available.
Do you have a rooster? Sometimes an aggressive rooster will take on a predator. Mine do battle with hawks and falcons from time to time. Sometimes you have a bloodied hen and and battered rooster but at the end of the day all heads are accounted for.

Also, you don't need a big dog to scare a fox. A little yippy dog with attitude will do the job. Probably. Much more mum friendly too

I had a rooster, a really handsome fella but he was killed last weekend by the fox! hopefully getting a new one tomorrow
