We were going to raise compost worm to the stage where we could feed them as a staple protein to our chickens. We were told by a pet-shop owner, however, not to feed them to turtles more than once a week, but to feed them earth worms instead, as compost worms excrete a substance that is toxic to all animals.

Has anyone else heard about this? Has anyone else given chickens compost worms as a staple diet without problems? The main thing we want to compost is our animal manure, so compost worms seems the most ideal.

Annie

P.S. I have cross-posted this to the composting forum as well, and will cross-post any replies.

I could not find any articles about red wiggler toxicity to chickens, only to pet reptiles.

Here's an article about raising red wigglers for chickens http://www.themodernhomestead.us/article/Earthworms.html

You might also want to look into also raising Black Soldier Fly larvae as chicken food, for variety.
