Perhaps so. Puffed rice cakes are usually rather brown and reticulated in the grain, no?

Why so tight? Well fitted, such as would be adequate to pop corn and retain it in a saucepan ought to work. You could hold the lid on and shake the pan to keep it from burning.
Or you could use a screw-down pressure cooker. But this would not give you as much control.

It would be hard to hand crank something while cooking, which is something I do actively.

I thing the chimney itself would have to get and stay hot to keep the air moving. I'm not sure it would get warm from cooking.
Maybe a reverse solar furnace, with the heated air blowing away and drawing cooking smoke out with it might work.
A lifestyle change to cook in the daytime only might be in order.

Hello all.
I'm at the planning stage for an off-grid home. So much to consider and sort out.
Wonder what non-electric ideas some of you might have for venting cooking fumes and odors when needed.
I am open even to rubber band powered propellers to move air. I don't see that I will need this often, but still want my design to have some kind of system in place
to move air.

Puffed rice is popular in Bangladesh. I'm told that this is how they do it there:
In a big skillet or pot with tight cover, heat clean, dry sand until very hot.
Then the grain to be puffed is stirred in quickly, the pot covered briefly until the puffing slows.
Then the grain is scooped out with a wire strainer and shaken clean of any sand.

Maybe keep it simple and just juice some fresh fruits and vegetables. You can go a while on stuff like this before adding more more substantial food to your diet.
If you buy ready made shakes and meal replacements, you really don't know what (else) you are getting.
I suspect that there is some good for us stuff in real food that is yet to be discovered.

Anything that gets a breeze blowing through the screens will work. The air does not need to be very warm. Do you think a solar chimney of some sort would work?
Even a near-flattened black-painted trash barrel with vents could function to create a breeze, though would only work in sunshine.

Wonder if anyone has any experience with or thoughts on using a partial or full paracrete or papercrete variation in the bags?
I am planning to build a small, round emergency shelter underground. I am a very small person, and not very strong. I'm going to be doing this project by myself, so want minimum weight to bags that will give me an effective wall. I'm just at the thinking it through stage.
Thanks for any advice.

I just read an ebook on ZED (zero energy design) which can be found on the web. Very interesting information about using a double envelope for a home. An attached greenhouse is great for this. I will warn you that the book content is at least 80% political rambling. Still, worth the read for the information within it. I've adjusted a lot of my thinking on many, but not all things since reading it.
