you definitely want to be careful with the laptop charger.

It will matter a lot where Dell put the charge controller circuitry for the battery.

I'm sure the overtemp protection is inside the battery itself, so fire shouldn't be a problem.

However, I wouldn't be surprised if that brick is doing the constant current/ constant voltage switching that Lithium batteries need in order to have such a long life.
(also called "intelligent charging")

If that's the case and you just throw it it on a relatively constant voltage supply (like a car or a DC solar system) you could dramatically shorten the service life of your battery

Hi all,

My wife and I are homesteaders in the NH mountains.

We had an accidentally thawed chest freezer ruin hundreds of pounds of wild game and pastured poultry.

This inspired us to create the Solidus, which we are launching on Kickstarter 6/2/15.

https://youtu.be/BeWWbUlgOYY

Solidus is a wifi enabled device that fits in the palm of your hand and notifies you anywhere in the world if the temperatures you care most about on your homestead are getting out of line. It does this with no subscription fee and with an MSRP of only $50

Homesteading applications include warnings for:
-Accidentally thawing freezers
-Greenhouses freezing or overheating
-Extreme heat/cold in livestock housing
-Pipes that risk freezing in winter
-Power or heating failures in unattended buildings
-Home brewing, lager fermentation

I know this is my first forum post, since I'm not typically a forum-person, so this feels a bit spammy and I feel a deep seated need to justify myself. I came to permies through Jack Spirko and TSP, I've probably listened to 60-70% of Paul's podcasts(I know that's a useful metric), and I've been on the daily-ish email for close to a year now. I'm currently brooding a run of 15 freedom ranger broilers, and I have more square feet of sheet mulched, no-till vegetable garden going in this year than I have square feet in my house. Hopefully this is enough street cred to make up for the whole "plugging-yourself-on-your-first-post" sin. I'm a mechanical engineer by trade, so I'm going to poke around the other boards and see if there's any help I can provide in return.

I'd love to know what everyone thinks of the product itself, as well as my online efforts to promote it up to this point.

Of course, I would be humbled if you would please consider sharing these links, or even backing the project if it sounds like a product you're interested in.
