I think what you overlook terry, is that we all carry different truths in us, and No man should get to choose another mans truth.......what is a truth for one is a. Corporate lie to another.
I don't think the French woodworkers were ever accused of being plain or utilitarian! Hehehe!
It takes a lot of work and time to inlay a date and it is an old practice, that 1442 wasn't something that was done quickly, and the white inlay wood was very expensive........
If that's what Burra said then I think we are still missing some of the story, I got my apples taken away, from my POV nothing happened so I asked and got the answer, so turns out I'm super Irish and was raised to meet injustice with fierce opposition, and what I saw as just standing up for myself was too strong for most non Irish civilians ( AKA I was wrong) so it was explained to me what got my apples removed, and I accepted it and apologized.
Burra was awesome about it, I didn't feel judged, but just corrected. I gained a lot of respect for what she must put up with in these situations and was glad that I handled it like a civilized person, and I think regained her respect in the exchange by being cool about the whole thing. After all it was my fault not hers, or Pauls, but I know sometimes it's easier for me to blame folks rather than take responsibility.
The German turning tradition goes way back, but for some reason Americans call it colonial German.....ego I suppose because it was around from about 1000-1850 or so. Sweden would have been using these same teachings taught from master to apprentice.
Yes, I need to get you some spindles!
I have just started my first wheel, but there are a lot of tools that I need to make as they are not sold. So every step is an engineering feat! But hey it's fun!
That wheel is too nice! You'll have to do better than a drop spindle if he's anything like me!
Does the base wood plank say 1442? That looks like a date in the wood itself to me, better than a note!
The. Turning looks like colonial German work to me, that tradition carried into the 1800s and was dead by 1900. It could be quite old.....I see no signs of modern woodworking, parts are left on that we remove, and details are made that very few of us take the time to include anymore......very nice indeed
Yes you can harvest it and build, like you said knowing its strengths and weaknesses helps do so in a way that you can get the best product out of your labor.
Ash also splits well, that can be another weakness or strength depending on design. It will split itself under certain loads.
Most of all just be aware of any soil contact with ash members, this will be the thing that speeds all the issues.
I am a father of a ten yr old boy, and we chose to homeschool from jump street, schools are teaching to tests now with little more being taught.
I compare this to monoculture farming, you get what you need this season, at the cost if the soil ( children )
We prefer to teach skills, history, tradeswork, animal husbandry, and music along with the standard school subjects, I think a lot if this can be compared to planting a perennial garden or orchard, the fruit will be harvested for many years, and is better for the soil (children)
I never really thought of it till this thread made me think it over, so it's a little simple but.....
If you can shoot a man and watch him die, without remorse, than I will be praying for you.......
Again most citizens don't know what is involved, sometimes it gets you two years later, but it has a way of getting you sometime in life. This isn't throwing a rock at someone, I know well trained ex Army Scout Rangers who break down fairly often, who cry themselves to sleep, who have suicidal thoughts, who lash out at family violently.....not one or two but many.....strong warrior men who can't take the consequence of the actions. It is real, it hurts, it is human to have this issue, if you didn't I would worry about your sanity, and stability.
So traditional info is that garlic can't compete with weeds, I am wondering if anyone has used cover crops successfully with garlic? If so what worked, and for that matter what didn't!
Statistics of victims are great, when you add guns you add gunshot victims as well......
My advice is to move away from the cities they are high rape/crime centers, the gun is not required if you live in a place where you don't have to worry that your wife will be raped.
Again if you live in a place where this is a real concern and not suburban paranoia then I ask "why are you living there?" Seriously, you are free to move, then you don't have to go through the pain of taking a life.....
Any marines or army rangers wanna talk about your experience with dealing with killing? How it effects your whole life, how it's not what the average citizen thinks they are getting into?
Americans like to pretend they live in some third world post apocalyptic gang land, we go to work in an office dressed in a silk suit, in cars no more than five years old that have all the options, we can live years without touching the actual dirt ground.
Our life is so safe that there is a primitive us that wants the chance of danger, so we make it up, those druggies are gone rob me any min, the gangs want to take our women, when really the druggies know your stuff has no value and the gangs don't want your 45 yr old wife.
But if I can walk around with a gun I can pretend for just a moment that something exiting might just happen, to break up the monotony of the city hellscape of boredom.
The funniest part is we send our kids to war and scar them when we have these types running around unhappy, paranoid and privileged to be able to pretend that something might happen.
Problem is when something happens it's not good, jail, injury to oneself, injury or death of loved ones, dealing with the fact that you killed your neighbors kid or your nephew. Whether through jail or downward spiral of depression they offten lose their families, now living in a hell wishing for the boredom of the privileged city life.
I understand this forum has less hippy types than your standard permaculture drum circle but wow!
Care of earth, care of people, return the surplus.
The metal and manufacturing is not sustainable ( not caring for earth)
False sense of power and heroism, unhealthy need to justify using it (not caring for people)
Hunting is so easy that one tends to over harvest ( potential to not return surplus or take more than fair share)
I have guns, but not for killing a man who is in a hard time in life, they are family heirlooms, former work guns, and that's about it, and they are locked up so tight I couldn't use them as " protection"
If something is after my goats or chickens they will meet the bow and arrow, as both are in range of my windows, but this weapon again is not for men.
If you come to my house in a bad time in your life, you will be disarmed and neutralized, then hopefully fed a sandwich and sent on your way, I have been there...
If you are so ready to kill a man for coming into a house then I know that you have not had to do that before.....I pray that you have the strength to live with the decision if you ever do kill, and I beg you to change your mind. It is not an action that should be talked about as if the invader looses that fight, when this happens you loose as well, possibly loose your mind, then with that goes your family, your wife remarries your kids grow distant. The things that you think you are tough enough to protect because you bought a $300 gun are the very things you stand to loose. That's the real story.
Success rates of defending yourself with your hands and mind far outweigh the rates of using any weapon.
If this is a real issue where you live please ask yourself if this is where you want to live, I live in an Amish town, we don't leave our doors unlocked we literally leave our doors open airing out the house when we leave. I went to buy milk from an Amish friend yesterday his barn, leather shop with thousands in tools, and three house doors were wide open, I yelled in and left. I can guarantee that he came home to nothing missing, and you would too.
Sometimes we think everyone is after our stuff when it just isn't true, for the most part no one wants your crap! In the areas of urban cities where it is true your standard of living is so low that i beg you to move, life can be so much better, it really can.
Ok, my whole family is police and military, I grew up around guns, big guns small guns, guns just for work, guns just for play. The whole while responsible use and storage and care were ensured and taught. We would go to the shooting range, I've gone hunting a lot, and as kids we took them out and shot things without permission.
Ok so let me tell you what is likely never going to happen as a gun owner, your family is not going to get killed and raped, you aren't going to have some guy bust in the house with classic movie bad guy apparel. The chances of theses things happening in a way that you can react to are so very small. Then if you can react you will be caught off guard and fumble while that person is unlocked and pre loaded, you will be much more likely to get shot going for a gun than complying. So, even in a a senario that has near impossible odds, getting the properly stored gun is unwise.
Ok, now that we looked at the reality of you being a hero against some masked marauder, let's look at should you have one, for other reasons.
This is simply akin to religion, some believe very powerfully in each camp, don't own guns people have great reasons why, own guns folks have "some" good reasons why, there is no person who can choose your religion for you, and no one can choose this camp for you either, it is arrived at by inner reflection and thought.
"Some" only because I thing gun owners site some pretty weak arguments for guns, when there are some good ones available.
I own lots of guns, some family guns, some that are super long range, none get used really. That is the most likely outcome of your gun, to sit unused after a year.
Ok, so my thought regarding permaculture and guns....
The metal and shell casing metal and powder are high carbon foot items
Care of earth....hunting may be taking more than fair share, that's not for me to decide, but there is some caring in dispatching injured large animals
There are other tools that do most of these jobs better and aren't as dangerous around unskilled hands
And let's not forget you are throwing lead all over your design!
The thing about goats is, they seem to know what you want eaten and avoid that! Invasive species are less palatable then what goats enjoy a lot of times too, so they may have experienced that too.
For me personally, I don't care what percentile you fall in, You can become a person whom I wanna punch in the teeth while being poorly paid.....
( I really don't wanna punch people in the teeth very much, but " I don't wanna be your friend" doesn't carry the same wieght)
The most evil thing for me is the corporate uncaring, treating people like numbers and non thinking profit banks, employees as replaceable scum.
The next most evil thing is the millions of non thinking profit banks, and replaceable employees, that prove them right everyday by showing up to buy trash and showing up for a job that is not what they believe in, and have no passion for.
I agree that going after the 1% is the wrong attack, but I misunderstood, I assumed these people were mad at the system that creates 99/1 not the actual 1%?!?
Yes they are very low output, and if you go to wood stove suppliers chances are you have seen the one place these have become usefull, heat transfer fans, designed to set on your stove and blow the hot air around the room. This is a tiny motor and it takes a 2x2 device to run it......
You'd have to be in a really understanding area to get value out of well raised stock at auction. Look into yout areas laws about sales butchering and packaging of meat. Most of the time knowing the limitations of each step will lead you to where you feel comfortable.
Here as an example, I can sell meat to an individual or a restaurant directly but not to a resaler, without a huge step in certification. The cost outweighs the amount I could make in a given time, so I choose not to take that step.......
You can do it a few simple ways such as sighting down three poles to locate the next, my favorite is I cut two really long poles and put them at the two ends and run a string high enough to be overhead for the rest of the work, 1000 ft might be two or three rolls of Mason's twine, but hey!
