Yup the Salt tax not one of the British Raj's finest moments I have to admit. I agree about the oils though we have mainly olive oil , butter and walnut oil . I am still looking for a new oil for cooking with though and finding good suet here in France is difficult as it's not part of the local traditions .
I can grow oranges here in France but they would not be the modern commercial kind are you sure you are not mixing the two . This I would expect Mark Twain was correct this may not indicate a change in temperature but of commecial operation .
Plus coconuts are often swept hunderds of miles from where they are grown and collected on the beach by the poor of many countries far to cold to grow there own .
One problem I see is you don't have the animals either the mega fauna - masterdon etc nor the numbers of smaller beasts such as buffalo to do heavy duty Eco work done by these larger animals in Africa .
I am shocked , shocked I tell you at Burra' s ignorance of this seminal rock band I can only assume that it must be due to her young age and being sheltered as a child in some remote welsh Valley . :-) ( as for Dale living in a remote colony as he does this is eminently excusable ) :-)
It was Ian Anderson who started my love of the flute , these days he owns a big chunk of the Isle of Skye based on earnings from his musical career .
I am becoming more and more convinced that we are facing a very subtle form of propaganda , with the aim of spreading confusion throughout the net. The Dilbert writer calls it confusopoly I think he could be right. It goes back to the tobacco propaganda of the 1960s the tobacco companies knew their product caused cancer so instead of admitting it they spread doubt and confusion as a deliberate policy .
Instead of the net empowering mankind it might just be slowing things down .
I looked at the link for France . It comes as no surprise as intensive farming is the norm here alas Pigeons and rabbits are both kept well confined at all times :-(
I wonder if quail would be a better bet ?
We have a dove cote here at La Ravardiere (pics in the link below ) but I have no intention of starting to keep them , too much work , mostly I try to keep them off my plants :-)
One thing I have seen in very old houses ( ie 15th centuary ) is that in the ceiling of the living room was a trap door to let the warm air rise into the " master" bed room when people retired for the night .
servants and children just got cold rooms :-(
Here in France I find loading up the starters works well
Aperatifs with our own dried pears ( cost in shops 30€ a kilo ) and home made dried tomatoes ,followed by home made humus ( fresh coriander from the garden ) with home made walnut bread ( 5€ a loaf in the shops )
Then for main course go exotic Indian curry :-) with home made chutney impress at no great cost :-)
Maybe commodity or people might be a different or more interesting way of looking at it :-) .
Comparing growing stuff for you and yours is a different kettle of fish to trying to make money and pay taxes never mind the time taken to fill in paperwork ( and you guys should see the stuff here in France ,pushing paper is a major industry I kid you not :-) )
I wonder if talking about things in terms of money is a red herring . After all Tax and the price of "stuff " are human constructs , subject to human change and politics For example the price of Petrol is about 1.30€ a litre thats about 10$ a gallon I think .
The only price I pay for wood for my stove is about 10€ a year for enough wood to heat my house thats the cost of electric for the saw . If I had to buy the wood its about 350€ thats what I earn in two weeks in my part time job . So to me its worth two weeks. I wonder if looking at our time cost is a better way of looking at this :-)
Must admit I am surprised that you have this problem . Are The wild Boars targeting the pipe or is it just getting in the way of their normal foraging activity ? . Maybe having it attached to a fence above the ground would help ?Pigs are very curious and will investigate any recent digging in the hope of finding food .
I don't think you realise how little you are taxed in the USA compared to Europe and much of the rest of the world .I note there is a lot of hype and propaganda about this with a mixture of laughter and sadness. Taxing petrol the same as the UK would be a start ( it's about £1.20 a litre )
Also the amount spent on the military in the USA boggles my mind it's more than china Russia , UK France germany Isreal , Iran and the gulf states combined!
I see all these issues a symptom of a greater malaise.
My solutions are quite simple really each country taxes the f@@@ out of oil and coal , economically encourages renewable energy and stops interfering in the buisness of other countries. Pollution is treachery along with Tax evasion, encourage self sufficiency .
Health care and clean water seen as rights not profit making scams . Policing to be based on communities not as a secret wealth or should that be lack of wealth tax . voting to made mandatory and constituencies based on logic not gerrymander.
There you go sorted it
Personally I am old enough to have seen difference in climate manifest themselves around me . The bird species in the UK have changed ,birds I once considered tropical or from the mediterainian at least have now become common in the UK even breed! Same with insects .
Why ? well that's pretty obvious to me too . There is only one suspect. Other folks seem to try to spread confusion and doubt but never offer any proof any other cause . Talk of carbon trading etc are only another part of what I think of as the confusopoly we are being conned I believe . In the Bible it says the love of money is the root of all evil it looks like it may cost us the earth . There is mo makers guarantee we cannot take the earth back if it brakes .
I totally agree about empowering people Travis . But for me we need to change the education system brake the cycle . Why not teach cooking at school ? For everyone ? ( along with basic economics , how to understand your electric bill etc ) or even gardening ?
Here in France , where I have a part time job in the local 16/19 school and in the UK I see that young people are expected to spend longer and longer in education yet it's all theory and lots of make work and hoop jumping . Is this equipping folks for life in the robotic century ?
I live not far from Hugo and currents are one of my big and to be honest free crops its so easy to propagate . I only cut them every four years . I have four groups of about Fifteen plants and cut back one group each year very hard . Just cut a pencil sized stick , make a hole with a spade , drop in the stick about three quarters in ,firm in with your foot . thats it come back a year later to trans plant
I think its really instructive to look how the arguments for and against climate change mirror the arguments regarding tobacco causing cancer. The tobacco companies spent millions trying to show smoking did not cause cancer , failed totally so spent many years casting doubt . Paid shills, confusion and plain old lies were there stock in trade. People for get that it was the Nazis who first discovered the cause of the increase in lung cancer in about 1940 unfortunately they were also complete bastards so everyone ignored their correct conclusion in this case .
I wonder if this is where goats could help usually you would want to keep them off the trees but in this case concentrated goats would help in killing off the trees . Another thought I had was making charcoal/ biochar out of these trees . Let's try to make good use of these trees people are more likely to work hard to get rid of them if they gain something tangible from doing it
Have you any pictures of the area that could show us the scale of the problem
Travis you have no idea .... Nike shoes , Viagra , Escorts , "real "fake documents and Exam certs , Nigerian Princes with financial issues services real and imagined so much rubbish in many languages it boggles the brain frankly .
