If not a viking then maybe a moth like Eric suggested?  Though I don't see any signs of pink I can't help but wonder how a spider might wrap something like this Rosy Maple Moth...

Some are more pink while others more yellow like this one:

If so it was a very small one, this time of year the hoppers are huge. Spider is maybe 2 inches top toes to bottom fingers as she hangs there. and I'm also wondering how she'd wad up a grasshopper so symmetrically.
That's the best theory so far...
Dunno. Not a grub, the pointy bits are yellow, and definitely pointy. Looked like little horns. Maybe she caught an itty bitty Viking!  :D

Pearl,

My first thought what with those yellow parts was that it was a moth or butterfly with its wings spread out.  But inside the cocoon, there appears to be something that looks vaguely like a grub.  Honestly, I don't know what it is, but it certainly is interesting!

I have a big garden spider living by my gate, and the other day she had something weird. Doesn't look like an egg sack, I can't think of what it may have been. All wrapped up, two yellow pointed parts sticking out of it like horns... What was it?? She looked pretty pleased with it, and it's not there now.
