I rented a small house in Kensington CT for a decade, " wild asparagus used to pop up every spring in a pasture across the road. Some walks over there would produce any where from 3 to 30 fine, tender specimens. Grilled over real charcoal for a minute produced , something like heaven. I always left some behind to go to seed.
Was also a small spring with watercress untill someone found it as well but "yanked" instead of just bringing a pair of scissors to harvest responsibly. Along with a little of fresh dill, Cains Mayonaise, and cracked black pepper, served on Brookline Bakery rye bread toast??? Add it's a hot summer evening??? Nuff said. Lol. Been twenty years since I had a water cress sandwhich,,, but I got me thinking, perhaps it has been too long. That's another reason that I like this forum.sometimes you don't miss what you had untill something you read triggers a memory
Everytime I plant a new fruit or nut tree I plant asparagus roots at the same time. That way when the trees are getting watered so is the asparagus. It's fun to be walking around and spot a green snack waiting for me. I eat it raw right then and there.
Thought I'd share my asparagus trucks.
When I plant new fruittrees I put asparagus roots in the tree weeks. That way when the tree gets watered so does the asparagus.
I usually buy 2 year roots, but last fall I bought some inexpensive asparagus seeds and just threw them in the Wells if my older trees. Some of them are coming up!
I LOVE when I can figure out an easier way to do things.
No, I don't get a huge yield this way, but it's fun to grab a spear or two when I'm put watering and eat them raw
