I make my fairies out of pipe cleaners, cotton embroidery floss, wood beads, and wool &/or re-purposed polyester felt. I can either make them with wooden heads or with felted heads with the hair sewn on. Just tell me your preference! It'll take me 1-2 weeks to make a fairy for you. Here are some of the fairies I have made. Please forgive my photography skills. They are not the best, nor is my camera! *(if you click on any of the images, you'll be taken to a full-size version of that image!)
Here's a set of siblings with felt-heads, complete with hats as well as swords and staves (purchased separately here)
And, here's three siblings with wooden heads.
This is a set of grandchildren fairies, each made to represent a grandchild:
Here's some more pictures of the baby fairy! I swaddled it in a felt , hand embroidered thimbleberry leaf. Since I was always frustrated when baby dolls came out of their swaddles and had no arms or legs, I made sure this one did!
If you'd like a fairy, please tell me what colors you like, if you'd like butterfly-styled wings, leaf-styled wings, or no wings. Tell me what color and length of hair. The curly hair I do is just cotton that I steamed and dried when wrapped around a pipecleaner and then unwound. The curls may strethc out, especially if played with! You can also tell me if you'd like them to wear a tunic, or a skirt, or something else. And, specify if you want them to be adult-sized or child-sized or a baby. You could also just specify what type of theme you'd like your fairy to have, like water fairy, lavender fairy, mushroom fairy, etc. and I'll run with the idea.
If you order more than one item from me, I will refund any extra shipping These are $16 per fairy.
It will take approximtely 1-2 weeks for me to custom-make a fairy. If you need it ASAP, moosage me, and I might be able to make it quicker.

Just sent off an order to you for the great grandkids through the mail...your choice of color and style, etc. just something different from the last ones.
I'm still trying to come up with a display or something for their collections...I keep thinking a tree shape of some sort, maybe to hang flat on the wall? I'm not as energetic about making gifts anymore so I'll have to keep it simple.
Your work is so lovely and fun!

Ooooh! I'm so excited to start making more for your great-grands, Judith! Do you want them to have the wooden heads like their last ones, or the felted heads that I've started doing?
Wildflower Toys used to make this adorable fairy house, but it looks like they're out of stock.
I wonder if a flat piece of wood could be cut into tree shape, and then little ledges/shelves added along it to act as branches/storage shelves? It wouldn't take up much space, but could be both a play area and storage space.
I need to find a home for my kids fairies, too! They tend to get deposited all around the house as they still have no home. The ones I made for my husband and I sit on our decorative shelf. It's kind of fun tucking them in tea cups or siting on books--it makes them seem more "alive" .

I'm happy leaving that up to you Nicole
I spent so many years weaving production items for sale that I know what a relief it is to just play and be creative for the sake of creativity and not feel like a customer is sitting on your shoulder while you are working. Please just enjoy what you do and let it be fun as that is what comes across in your work...I'm sure they will love the results.
...and I love that second fairy 'shelf' you've posted above...I'll have to look through the scrap wood pile and see if there's anything I can come up with. Something to hang on the wall is what I'm thinking.

Knowing that one of the kids' great-grandpa makes and sells wooden swords, and the other an expert woodworker, was great motivation to improve my carving skills!

I ran across this cute fairy home kit in my email box. I know it's not a display, but it reminded me of you asking about fairy homes. I like how everything is natural materials, down to the beeswax to act as "glue" for the kids to assemble their houses from.
It doesn't look terribly durable, though, but often kids view their fairies as precious treasures to be very gentle with, so they might enjoy assembling a home from little treasures likes these....though one could probably go out to a park or garden and find many of these fun things there. It's great for inspiration!
Nicole, that is a perfect idea! Especially if I could come up with a nice box for each of them and maybe some 'starter' materials...they are still young enough to think tiny...I always thought it interesting that young children see such small details Lately the girls have been asking about dyeing with my cosmos but would like to select the yellow ones...to me they are all orangish but they found the tiniest rare yellow one in amidst the rest...

I'm not sure if this idea will be kosher, but bigger liquor stores and usually any tobacco stores will sell their empty wooden cigar boxes, for anywhere between $2 And $6, depending on the size and quality of the box. You can smell them, and oddly enough, they usually smell very nice - especially the higher end ones. I've bought and used many, myself, overt the years. Some have hinged lids, some have sliding lids, some have lift -off lids, and there are so many shapes, colors, and sizes, I was amazed.

Nicole, here are pics. Looking for something in the line of the teal picture. Ruffly 12" tall. One or two hair sheep (all white) sized to the doll would be cool to go with it.
Doll doesn't have to be posed like that. Just a pic for inspiration.
Nicole, i am cleaning some of the shedded wool. I'll get it shipped sometime between now and friday. Interesting colors. Its been sitting outside for a couple years.
They are st croix but this one may be katadyn(sp?)
Color is not from the wool as they are white. This has been sitting around outside for a couple of years. I am not sure where the yellow came from. Maybe the sun getting to the oils in it?
(edit: I just noticed that you'd replied already--it took me a while to write and take pictures!)
Wayne, do you by any chance, have any pictures of your sheep? I just realized how fun it would be to make sheep out of the wool you sent, so they look a bit like themselves!
I'm actually in the process of making a toy sheep for my niece. Judith Browning had sent me this lovely natural brown wool a while back, and it was really fun making a sheep with it!
Hi Nicole! Please clarify the costs for faeries. There are 3 different prices in the first post. Are they for varying complexity of creation? I have a total of 4 granddaughters ranging in age from 19 down to 8. And scattered across the continent. If affordable enough, I'm thinking a red, an orange-haired yellow, a pink and a blue !
Thanks.

Thank you for spotting that, Cindy! I'd adjusted the prices last year to account for how much time I was spending on the fairies (they take at least 2 hours each to make). But, apparently when I'd changed the prices, I forgot one of them! Did I catch them all?
They should be $16 per fairy before shipping. I honestly shudder to think what shipping prices have gone up to since I last checked, but we're just not going to think about that right now!
