BTW I love the articles you sometimes write.  The first thing I ever read of yours was the article on ants.
Lots of good info & humorous-ya can't beat that!

Well, I don't have a good recipe but I'll tell you what, I love my cast iron skillets & would love to win yours.
Now, that might sound just a big greedy, but let me finish!
When I win, I would give yours to my daughter, Mary.  She is 31 and has 4 kids and cooks on aluminum, or *gasp*, non-stick coated pans!
My poor, poor little grandbabies are being served meals cooked in these deplorable pans.  I've offered to give her my skillets but she won't hear of taking mine from me.  They come with fond memories of Nana (me) cooking large breakfasts for the whole family at my house and of cooking over an open fire when we're camping.
Yes, we all go camping together once a year.  It's quite an experience with all of us (except my nature-impaired hubby) in attendance: me, both of my daughters, all 5 grandkids and at least one of our dogs, if not more.  I have been camping with the grandkids since the oldest, now 12.75 years old, was 2 years old.  I taught him how to start a campfire (my daughter wasn't exactly happy about that-probably why she goes with us now) and pitch a tent.
Why don't I buy her some skillets of her own, you ask? Well, we all know how store bought cast iron is AND (here comes the "pity" aspect to clinch the win!) my husband hasn't worked in 22 months and we're a bit short of cash.
All of what I have said is true, but I would really like to win just so I can see the look on her face when she hears that I won the skillet & am giving it to her!

Thanks!

Happy Earth Day.

My old nemesis: poison ivy. I do NOT know how to get rid of it other than to be more persistent than it is, but here are a couple of things I know:
A friend once burned it & got the smoke on him. He had the rash in his eyes, mouth, & throat, which nearly swelled shut.  He spent several days in the hospital.
If you get a rash, which I am lucky enough to do EVERY summer, I have a simple way to stop the itch. **Warning** this is probably not approved by your dermatologist** BUT it works:
When the rash starts to itch, run the affected body part under hot water-not scalding, just hotter than you would normally use for a nice hot shower.
While under the hot water, the affected body part will begin itching so badly you can hardly stand it-for about 6 seconds, then miraculously the itching will stop & not return for several hours.  Then you just repeat the process.
*Note: this has never damaged my skin, whereas itching the rash most certainly has!!

One last thing that I've heard but don't know if it's true:  after your female goat has ingested poison ivy, the milk will contain properties to help you build an immunity to your poison ivy allergy.
Being a city girl I've never had the opportunity to try this, but I would if I could!

[color=Purple]Ringer can be found at Home Depot.

I love this website & that there are people like me who don't know much about their lawns, but would like to have a lush, green lawn.

My hubby is "height resistant" when it comes to mowing our lawn.  I took over mowing the front yard last summer & even bought a push, reel mower!  I used it in the beginning of the summer, but it wasn't very useful in the later part.  It must need to be adjusted, too, as I had to mow the same area 3 or 4 times before it got all of the grass to the same height.  In some cases it never did come out to the same height.

If you have any suggestions to improve my mowing efficiency, it would be greatly appreciated.

(reely) like about the reel mower is the satisfaction I get from watching the blades of grass being cut.  It's also deeply gratifying when you mow through dandelions & watch as their little heads pop off and are flung into the air! Ha ha ha (maniacal laughter

I know that no one has posted to this in a while, but I just wanted to add that you can find the Ringer fertilizer at Home Depot.

This recipe sounds very interesting.  I'm always looking for meal ideas, especially breakfast.  I don't cook breakfast in the morning, so if I can make these the night before or make several batches & freeze them, my hubby will be a happy camper!

Thanks for the recipe.  I'll let you know how it turns out (I have to go to the grocery store first...)

I switched from aluminum to cast iron a couple of years ago.  I have a variety of skillet sizes and a small griddle.  I purchased the griddle and a small skillet new & both had the pitting that you described.

I'm happy to say that much use & a little time and the pitting is gone from both pans.

Thanks for the email!  I love reading your articles.  Keep up the good work.
