As I recall, my grandmother said citrus peels were good for the compost pile BUT you had to keep that compost longer than say traditional green scraps. Citrus peels take a little longer to decompose and so that may be why she said that. I am not sure of the pesticide factor on the peels but do know that until the peel begins to break down you do have some natural pesticide features happening in your compost pile. In fact as a child, I can recall my grandmother using citrus peels that she zested around areas she didn't want bugs to be. Please note I am going off of memories from 30+ years ago so some of the information may not be exact.

My grandmother was a firm believer of seeding the lawn once snow had come. She would go out and hand seed over the snow and always had the prettiest thick lawn in the neighborhood. She claimed that as the snow melted the seeds were drawn into the soil and took deeper root and was hardier. I have patch seeded in snow but never had the pretty lawn she did...

In "town" where we live now the bikes are used often (not as often as the could be) once we move... I am not so sure how they will work. 6 miles of dirt road and a bike?I am trying to figure out something besides the car to get that 6 miles twice a day every day if my daughter goes to the public school...

Perhaps rather than waiting for a disaster create a flier to mail to your local emergency agencies and also groups or organizations that assist in emergencies (such as Red Cross) include agencies as far away as you would be willing to travel. That way if/when a disaster happens the folks in charge of setting relief up will already have your information and the services you are able to provide.

Although we haven't got started on our permaculture experience yet (24 days) I have gathered many wonderful ideas! So when I saw standing snags on the property I knew what to do with them! HUGLECULTURE!!! Never heard of it until I was looking for some ideas on gardening to use less water and there was Paul Wheaton with a plethora of information!!!

So Paul a HUGE thank you for all the FREE information you offer and when I can make a few dollars off the things you have taught, I will share the abundance with the teacher...
