Just discovered this site and was sort of just putting a few posts up to flap my wings around here..  Then I get this really thoughtful reply with a great reference and I'm thinking Im gonna hang around a bit and check this place out.  very cool. 

you'd be suprised if the poster managed a flood crop or me?  I've brought in over a hundred thousand pounds of harvested of taro in ten years.  Is that surprising? 

I live and work on a fully developed thirty acre permaculture farm in Hawaii.  Lots of farms offer PDC and a all sorts of  things but they are mostly affluent people with zero knowledge and a neat outdoor kitchen and a garden and maybe some chickens.  Most of the courses Ive seen are over priced for what you get and youre not really learning much.  A lot of the farms are alternative communities of people who just woo woo around all day talking about things they just learned themselves.  www.waiholefresh.com .  thats the O'ahu permaculture site Im at.

On a more philosophical note has any heard of Joseph Cambel and heard his discussions on what the choice of being a vegetarian means in the larger spiritual context of symbol and religious myth?  He essentially says its the choice that spiritual esthetics take to deny the body what it craves and its the willful embrace of DEATH within the context of most world cultures.  .

take advantage of each season with the right crops.  Flooding is going to kill your off season flood crop then its time to plant your wet crop.  Here in Hawaii we dont have the freeze factor but we have lots of flooded fields.  Winter flooded fields are taro, ong choi, water cress, and prawns while the dry season crop is any annual vegetable. In Japan they like to alternate rice with buckwheat.  That might work for you???
