I've been wanting
bees for a while now. I live in a residential area in Fl. where its legal to keep beehives in your back
yard. i'm so interested that i have my own bee suit, smoker, hive tool and brush. I also belong to the
local beekeeper club. And I have done some inspections (it actually reminds me of hot electrical work :) ) I also have been getting my backyard ready for where i want to put the hive (it will be on
concrete facing south next to my small veg garden). Also, i have 2 little ones ages 10 and 7 and 2 dogs. My dream is to one day to have 2 hives, mostly for pollinating but eventually to get some
honey too.
So i have been slowly making progress towards my goal (i also want 2-3
chickens and 2 ducks) w/o rushing because i feel that getting animals is like having a baby. Best be prepared. Well, imagine my surprise when i found a beehive in the knot hole of one of my oaks last month! it seemed like a sign from the universe. i contacted a friend from the club to lend me a nuc box and got started on making a mesh cone. due to some crazy weather we've been having (mid 80's and then drops to 40's!) we have put off doing the trap out, but the longer i wait the more i start to think its better to just let them bee? (pun intended)
They are already doing what i want them to do (pollinating) and because they are 6' above ground they are safer (for them and for us) than if they were in a hive 3 ft of the ground. Also i'm guessing they will probably do a much better job at controlling pests and diseases in their tree hive without me interfering.
On the other hand, free bees! and if the queen is aggressive, i can re-queen (which i have 0 indication that they are aggressive. I have been watching them up close, but someone working in my yard said they got stung) which i was planing on doing just to get weaver disease resistant genetics.
So as you can see, i keep going back and forth! can someone please offer me some advice?
