Anyone using other social network sites that they like besides Facebook?

I have a facebook account but rarely use it, I've found I prefer the discussion board format. I also have an account here - http://earthineer.com/index.php - if I liked the social network format better, I'd be a lot more active.

After going through years of having to periodically change networking sites, or have multiple accounts I had to check, I am completely happy with facebook- because its a STANDARD. Practically everyone I know has a facebook account and I know I can get into contact, set up plans, share photos, etc. in ONE place.

Any "alternative" to facebook is going to be limited in scope and membership. You would also have to make all the people you want to communicate with have to set up accounts,
then you are back to keeping passwords and site addresses so you can talk to these family members, then another set to talk to those people, and another site to talk to them guys or gals, then, before you know it, you have a big mess and don't remember which people are on which networking site, you forget to check one for a month or two,etc.etc. etc.

Facebook does the job it is intended to do- basically serve as a directory and connection point to practically anyone, it is the de facto standard for the world
The whole point is social networking, and thats what facebook does very well.

I have been thinking about moving to Diaspora, kind of a decentralized, decommodified, open source Facebook. You can download the source code, and even start your own "node".

I'm on FB only to connect with other 'green' type people.
I'm on myspace to find interesting music and artists and to keep in touch with a cousin in Nimes, France.
I'm on last.fm to find good music. last.fm/motherafrica

Yup, that's it.

Anyone want to sign up for Diaspora*? There aren't too many permies on there I have been able to find. I found a pod with some bandwidth here in the US, but maybe there are reasons to go to an international one instead?

Here is my profile on the AptitudeWorks pod.

Sounds fishy. It smells fishy too. You say it's a tiny ad, but ...
