Being Green in the Good Old Days

My city, north of Montreal, in an attempt to be “green”, banned plastic bags at checkout from all commerce on its territory. The funny part is that while you cannot get a bag at checkout in the stores, the city requires you to put dead leaves in clear plastic bags when putting them to the street.

Anyhow, all that to say that this story about plastic bags made me laugh and reminded me of the contradictory policy in my city.

I listen to a lot of old-timey radio from the 1930s up until about 1960, and the other day I heard an ad extolling the virtues of the new disposable beer bottles by the Anchor Hocking Glass Company. So much for being green in the good old days.....

The ironic part of the article is flying the representatives, from all over the globe, to Durban. I have nothing against Durban, South Africa (it is a wonderful town), but if they were concerned about carbon emissions, couldn't they have found a more centralized city?
