Hunny is making a leather scabard. I am to find rivets to make this happen. I am unsure as to weather a given rivet has a shaft long enough to hold the layers of rivets together. Many that I have looked at list the diameter of the visible rivet head. Am I missing the length of the shaft? Am I simply not shopping at the right online stores?

Also, no sewing machine in my home is in working order. (sob) So we intend to use the rivets as the closures.

in case I am not using the correct teminology, here is a pic of what I have used on denim clothing. The shaft is way too short for layerrs of leather. i think the head, near 6mm, is plenty large to prevent the leather from pulling apart.

We shop almost entirely between tandy and Springfield leather companies. Springfield is not only closer to us, but often less expensive than Tandy, with just a good of a selection, or better.

"Jiffy rivets" as a search term will get you plenty of suppliers, and lots of styles.
As far a sizes and lengths go, each head size is available in one to three post sizes that are proportional to the heads. A small rivet has shortest posts and would be for finer/thin work, medium rivet has medium-length posts, large rivets have the longest posts.

Okay, from Tandy leather I found this listing.

Large: Cap 0.34 (8.73 mm), Post 0.5 (12.7 mm), Base 0.31 in. (7.94 mm)

As I read it, the shaft is listed as a 'post' on their large rivet and is 1/2 inch in length. Am I reading it correctly?

And how thin can I pound these? I want to know if I need to purchase 2 sizes.

If you're using them as your whole connection, I'd get the two sizes, rather than risk pounding them too thin & weakening them.

I reuse 22 caliber spent rim fire cartridges for leather rivets.

I just hammer the spent casing through the leather pieces forming an exact hole, then pull out the leather slug, then use a big center punch to start the flaring of the rivet/shell casing, and then hammer it flat.

You can apply heat too to make the rivet easier to form
