So I've heard that one can pull off the little "propeller" parts that make it like a helicopter, and extract the tiny bean-like seeds from the shell.  Then what?  Should they be cooked?  eaten raw in salads?  Would there be too many tannons to eat them raw?

And can I pick them up off the ground or do they need to be picked while still attached to the maple tree?  We've got maples back behind our building shading my balcony, with tons of shade, so I'd like to think I can make use of these trees somehow.

I have heard that maple leaves are sweet though I have not has the opportunity to taste them because all I have are oaks and junipers.

I have read in the past about treating them similar to acorns to leach out the bitterness.

Here is a thread about maple seeds:

If you decide to try the seeds, keep in mind which ones come from which trees. My "old man" norway maple generates very tasty seeds, but my neighbor's norway's seeds are bitter.
