I run a kids camp every summer. We take 35 kids for the better part of a week. We do background checks on all adults that are on the premises, even parents if they remain. This is required by our insurance company. We carry insurance for injuries that could occur (none ever have) as well as sexual misconduct insurance (never had an issue here either) as it is also required when having kids on the property.
We also have a hold-harmless agreement as an added pre-caution. There are lots of little things to consider, like never going in the first aid tent (or anywhere else) alone with a kid unless someone else is alerted and the door is left open etc...
Most of these are really counter-intuitive to me since we are all about building a village and community but they are what are required in this era.
Btw, the camp is on rural acreage that is incredibly pristine with old growth cedar stumps as nurse
trees to second growth and lots of meadow. Some of the kids we have are locals and others are inter-city kids. Some of the kids are afraid to take their shoes off and run barefoot as they have never been allowed. We had one child who was concerned about stepping on a needle! There are definitely some heart-wrenching moments when working with kids from all sorts of backgrounds.
I hope this is helpful.
