Anyone have a connection in Scotland they could share with me? I'm heading to Findhorn in March and hope to stay on a sheep farm while I'm there. Gracias!

Hi Irene, have you checked out HelpX, WorkAway or WWOOFing? I found quite a few opportunities in Scotland on those sites last time I checked 1-2 years ago. I do have an uncle on Skye who farms a small number of sheep on a croft - his main income is from contract fencing and shearing though. He provides work for one of my cousins and often hires in a couple of shearers during the season. Dunno if he'd want additional help.

Thank you Sam, I have thought of Woofing, and I'll look at the other two. I'm mostly looking to visit for just a couple days so I will be offering money to sleep somewhere and not "working" so much as observing if possible. I want to learn about sheep, a little at a time, before getting any. I will follow up on your leads, thank you so much.

In that case, a better approach might be to ask around on some of the UK smallholding forums such as downsizer.net or accidentalsmallholder.net. They tend to be a friendly bunch and they might have a better knowledge of the kind of place you're looking for! Some might even be willing to show you round their places. Permaculture Associations, UK/Scottish websites and Facebook groups could be an option too.

Best of luck with it!

Hi Irene, we aren't far from Findhorn (about 50mins drive) but we won't be lambing until mid April. Most smaller farmers up here lamb late because of the bad weather. We only have a very small flock of 11 at the moment but you'd be welcome. PM me if you'd like to know more.

If you're already heading to Findhorn, the foundation also has an incredible homestead location on the Isle of Erraid that is, among things, a sheep farm. It is a hauntingly beautiful private island in the Hebrides and very close to Iona (which is worth visiting as well). Very different from the ecovillage in Forres. Years ago they did work/trade. I am not sure what the offer is now though probably worth checking out
