Is this for forum for talking about the means of communication (devices/smoke signals/etc.) or the act of communicating with people (written, visual etc.)? I think this is where having a large vocabulary is very helpful. It would be better to use words that haven't been misused to the point of not having the original definition. Using words that have one or two definitions at most but not always an option. My Comm. Professor said that the whole process is dependent upon the receiving person's definition of the words that are used by the sender. Then of course there is tone and facial expressions. Its interesting that our ancestors communicated by letter a lot and yet they seemed to not have issues of misunderstanding with written communication. Today I see nothing but misunderstanding in written communication. I theorize it has to do with the words that we use.

One of my favorite lines is from Cool Hand Luke "What we have here is a failure to communicate"

I also am into learning how to use HAM radio's and I purchased a Baofeng UV-5R hand held 2m-70cm radio. Depending on the community size the need to get information to people that are on the other side of can be at times just as important. For instance on Paul's property with dangerous animals and large equipment being able to call to the rest of his community for help could be a life saver.

I think that both the means of the communication and the act of communication could be really valuable things to discuss.

Ham radios fascinate me. Then again, so do carrier pigeons! I love the story of Cher Ami, the carrier pigeon who saved the lives of 190 soldiers in WWI. Cher Ami was discovered to be female when she passed away. She is now stuffed and on display at the Smithsonian.

.. I would find this forum helpful and interesting also! .. my critters (especially the rabbits) have taught me much, as to how to communicate/interact with others.. if humans had ears and tails to cue from, rather than (often poorly chosen) words, it would be so much easier!

I thought you said "pie." This is just a tiny ad
