Finding a good kitchen
compost receptacle has been a long process for my household but we have finally found something that seems to be working well in the long term. We have tried bowls, pails of various sizes, compost containers of various sizes, modified garbage receptacles and even plain plastic bags. What we have settled on is a five gallon plastic pail with a threaded gamma lid top. The gamma lid is a brand name lid that is two pieces. Piece one snaps onto the pail like a normal lid but is just a ring with an almost full pail size threaded hole in the middle. The other half is a coarse threaded lid with an O ring gasket. Liquid and vapour proof it is working well for us and my only complaint is that unlike a normal pail the gamma lidded pail traps a bit of stuff on the inner lip so it doesn't pour out completely. Minor problem that we can live with, otherwise we are very happy with it especially since I am now adding food liquids of any sort to give the
humanure pile a shot of moisture when I add the kitchen waste.
