New Wedding Registry = homesteader's garden

I love the trend of Wedding Registries being landscape plants and edible garden plants. Over the past 2 years, I've designed 5 gardens for couples to use as their wedding gift registry.
This one is for a couple in Roanoke & they forwarded their guest a spreadsheet of all of the plants along with the plan & garden center info to call for purchases (so that their plants are not duped and the most important ones are purchased first). The "party" after the ceremony will be a planting party.
How great to be surrounded by and feasting on wedding gifts, forever.

That is a very cool and lovely idea. I would totally do that . . . if I ever decided to get married again . . . which I won't. But it's still a lovely idea. A great marketing tool for designers to use, too.

Considering how many wedding presents get minimal use, I agree this is an improvement. Biodegradable if anything goes wrong too!

It also will likely include many different price points, so that guests with different disposable income should still be able to participate.

The only downside I see is how few first time newly weds have permanent gardens. Some large potted edibles that can move with the couple might be indicated at times.

I absolutely LOVE this idea <3 - even for those who are not permaculture addicts hehe!  So, would these be called Garden Wedding Registries then?  I am sure that local suppliers can get involved, and depending on the intention, it could be a food forest, or a low-maintenance, low/no watering thing that is needed in the southwest USA.  Native plants help here, and as an herbalist, I would add medicinal ones too!

This is such a cool idea. I won't get married again because my wife doesn't believe in polygamy. Oh wait, I don't either.

I thought we were out there when I signed up at a now defunct outdoor sports store, the late GI Joes for those who lived in the Pacific Northwest.
Weddings for years were the last hold out for crass offensive materialism. Why not buy something you believe in? It's a lot better than some of the other
gifts that keep on giving.

This is a beautiful idea.  I know owners of two different nurseries.  I'm going to ask them if they've heard of it, maybe send them a link to this thread.  If not they might begin to promote the practice in the trade shows they attend.

It could also be a great idea for housewarming or a big anniversary, a 25th or something.  Not everyone has stayed in the same place all their years of marriage.  Maybe when people finally get their plot of earth, it would be an idea for birthday and other gift giving occasions for a couple of years to come.

I also thought of including a $1000 gift certificate to the buyers of my house, (if and when I sell), from a great but little known native plant nursery (owned by friends).  

Thanks everyone!  Where the fruit trees are, will be a food forest and does include plenty of medicinals and other bene herbs, pollinators etc.  Happily, I also have a garden center, no sprays, chemicals etc so we can offer a 1 stop shop from consultation, to designing , running the gift registry & prioritizing the plants wanted.  I wish all clean nurseries offered this.  Can you imagine the results if many did this vs disposable unused wedding gifts???

Glad to see more useful gifts are being given at weddings. About 5 years ago when I got hitched I tried creating a registry at an online tree nursery...it did not go over too well as people have gotten used to thinking of registries as expensive plates and forks from Macy's that only get used once or twice a year. I hope this trend continues.

Any idea what the general acceptance rate is these days for people willing to give non-traditional wedding gifts?
