Hi Ethan.   Does the hair of all furry mammals act similarly to sheep wool? We probably have to compare raw wool to raw other.  Haven't heard of  anything else being pelletized.

All related violas and violets are not only edible but also medicinal.  Not African violets, different family. Violets are also called Heart's Ease, soothing spirits that are heartbroken and grieving. Pansies, violets, Johnny Jum Ups all work and taste pretty much the same.

Has anyone tried this in High Desert areas? How much water is minimally needed to keep it growing? What is its USDA zone?

I cannon do raw foods in the winter.  When the weather is warm about 50 percent of my diet is raw.  This is what works for me and roughly follows Ayurvedic principles for my body type.  Individual approaches to food are going to be more successful.  Experiment.

You will get new clothes.  Really got this once. How is it related to permies? Permies wear clothes.

Just to muddy the waters, here is my experience with mixing vinegar and baking soda.   In a really gross toilet bowl, I added them to the water in the toilet.  Got great bubbles and a super clean bowl below the water line without scrubbing.  Above the water line, even where the bubbles were, not much happened.  This rigorous scientific testing indicates that the combination of baking soda and water is more than simply water, at least in the initial phase.
Perhaps, the combination can be useful in limited circumstances, and if you are experimenting have water at the ready.

No one has mentioned shade cloth. Even with heavy mulching, I shade most of my garden in the afternoon when it gets over 90 F.
My experience with sunchokes seems to be different than others.  The more recently I pulled them from the ground, the less gas.   When eaten immediately, I have little to no gas , whether raw or cooked, peeled or unpeeled.  A week later, and it's not fun for anyone.  Has anyone else noticed this difference?

Since grease cutting with no purchased products is the goal, maybe the limonene is a key.  I 'm not this far along in my DIY yet so I''m not set up to experiment directly myself, but I have a couple of ideas.  I have a commercial degreaser that is made from orange seed.  Are citrus seeds the source of limonene?  There is a little bit of essential oil in rinds. Might rinds  blended well have some effect?
