Thanks Kate,

I did cut the bottom out of my box after two tries and my wood stove does have a grate on top for heading items. I may just need to let it heat up longer.
I do like the idea of trying a Dutch oven since I've never done that before.

Hello Kate,

Hoping you can help with a technical issue. I've been trying to bake my bread in an insulated tin box I made over my wood stove. I can't seem to get the temp up to 350. My next try is going to put some fire brick in the oven to see if that will hold enough heat for baking bread.
Any thoughts or ideas will be appreciated.

I don't have a suggestion for this year, but what has been working good for us is a rocket mass heater.
I installed one in our hoop house a couple of years ago and now we start our seeds in there the first of April.   We live in zone 3 so
not too much goes into the garden before the 1st of June. Even then we have lost some gardens because of a late frost in June. The heater mass is about 28 feet long and 2 feet wide. I put about a 2 foot tall shelf on top of that to drape some plastic over. At night we put some old sleeping bags over the top to retain the heat. After the initial warm up I'll usually fire it up for 1 1/2 hours each night.
This systm has replaced many lights and shelves that used to be in our garage.

Do you know if it's available and can be grown in central MN in sandy soil?

With the height of the trees pictured I think you will need more pipe. I installed a stove this fall and even though I was 2' higher than the closest roof section I still had smoke. One more three foot section took care of it.

We have one field ready for planting that consists of six rows 150' long. Each row is a 4' wide piece of landscape fabric with four inch holes every two feet. The rows are 11' apart with lumber tarps filling between each row. The lumber tarps control the weeds and help retain the moisture as we have sandy soil.
If there are still more seeds, we have another area like it that has 8 rows at 60' long. Thats about 690 spots to put a seed.
I'd love to compare them to the wool socks I've been wearing all winter.
