Biography
Suburban homesteader, with a full time job. I get so much satisfaction out of doing things by hand, growing things, and being in touch with nature. I’ve been studying and practicing homesteading since 2020 and found Permies in 2023. I love the SKIP concept and hope to use it to improve my skills and give me some direction and order in all these lovely topics I’ve been bouncing around.

Cleaned out the P trap in our utility sink. The gunk I pulled out of there had a foul smell like I’ve never smelled before. Yuck. They went back together and didn’t leak.

First time fermenting and I don't hate it so far.

Recipe found here: https://vancouverwithlove.com/how-to-make-sauerkraut-easy-vegan-gluten-free/
Essentially slice red cabbage thinly and evenly so it ferments at the same time. Fill jar. Dissolve 1 TBS sea salt to 3 cups water. Pour over. Cover the jar. Vent as needed. Four days.

I used my fancy new fermentation venting lids, with glass weights preventing the food from touching the lid.

Let steep four days. Refrigerate afterward. I am letting the second one go a couple days longer to see if I like it.

Dried sage leaves. Air drying was taking a long time so I finished in the dehydrator.

I crocheted a disguise for my porch goose. If Otis or Otessa is from anywhere around the Ohio Valley they understand the cultural significance of dressed porch geese.
Seriously though, if this doesn't qualify I understand but I felt like it bridges some aspects of textiles (creating custom fit clothing from natural materials) and community (artwork/decoration for the neighborhood, cultural trends). It certainly feels "odd" just not sure if ball. I'd only ask for 0.5 point here given the piano factor, its more about the skills involved creating a woven piece of "art" or clothing.

This took me about 8 hours of crocheting with six colors of yarn.

Lemon balm tea to help with the head cold. I hope. First submission timed out so hopefully this isn’t a dupe.

Fried eggs this morning and videoed the progress. I ended up frying a few more which led to some crumblies in the pan so I had to use the hot water method of cleaning. Still very simple. I greased it with coconut oil afterward to get it ready for the next meal.

I can't seem to get the imbed to work so here's the link for now: Egg Frying Video

My first video upload so fingers crossed this works.
Used this as a two-fer with community living. Branded my relaxation spot in my backyard as Paradise Pavillion.
Added some artwork of birds to fancy it up a bit.

To document your completion of the BB, provide pics or video (<2 min) of the following:
- The wood and your burning tools
- The sign getting burned
- The sign getting oiled (showing type of oil)
- The sign meeting the minimum size
- The sign hanging or posted
Here's my post about my place Backyard Oasis

and I branded it "Paradise Pavillion" complete with typo since it's burned in the wood.

Hey everybody!
I'm working on my community badge in the PEP space, and part of that includes sharing a post about a location that you're branding. I am new to posting outside of the PEP world here so I hope this is relevant where I've put it.

We have a suburban lot in which I do a fair amount of homestead-related activities, but in the spare space I have built what I'm branding as "Paradise Pavillion" (complete with typo since I burnt that in wood without realizing I'd spelled it wrong.

This all started several years ago when my kids enjoyed a blow up pool many months out of the year so I decided to make it a permanent fixture.

I leveled out the spot and put sand down, and dreamt of the day I'd get a stock tank to finish it out.

Next summer I got a stock tank and built a shelter for the pump with a waterfall as the water return system.

Our old rickety play set had seen better days so my husband went at it with a sawz-all and my task of building a new structure for the kids was born. In the beginning it looked like we were setting up a giant stage in the backyard. Then I added some walls and a roof so our daughter (and secretly I) would have a cool space to hang out outside.

I added curtains and shutters, and found a hammock swing at Aldi that was a perfect addition. My daughter picked out some flamingo pillows to give it some flair.

I like to hang out in the pool in the summer time and pretend I'm in some exotic place on vacation, when I'm not busy maintaining all the crazy I've built up around here.

I extended the deck around the side of the pool so we can sit and soak our feet if we don't want to get all the way in. Next year I'll build some stairs on the other end of this deck to make it easier to walk up. Maybe some skirting on the bottom to hide the storage area. I have curtains to add on the half wall but haven't sewn them down to size yet.

I see this as our little oasis in the city to reconnect with outside while dreaming or reading away.
