This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the sand badge in Natural Medicine.

In this badge bit, you will harvest, dry and store oregon grape stem or root bark

You need to dry enough to make a tea, infusion or decoction.

To show you've completed this Badge Bit, you must post:
- a picture of your fresh herbs being harvested
- a picture of your herbs drying (hanging, in a dehydrator, or in a bag, etc)
- a picture of your herbs in a sealed and labelled container.
    - label shows where the herbs came from, the date and method of drying.

Oregon Grape - stem bark

I chose a patch growing near the front of my house. There are quite a few mature mahonias, some taller than I am, and so many seedlings. Gathered softwood cuttings,  rinsed, and scraped the bark off the stems using a pocket knife. Strip the bark while very fresh and green. Bark that is dried to the stem is hard to remove. The sticks were reserved for a future project (see Make a Loom). Bark peelings were hung in a mesh bag in the shade to dry. Less than 48 hours at 90 degrees F.  About 2 cups dried was put into an 8oz jar and labeled.

I've pruned this one several times over 10 years, and it is still way over my head.

I harvested several stems about this size. Not tiny, but not old wood.

We went on an edible nature walk in the Boise foothills this morning. Our guide Ray pointed out this Oregon Grape and I harvested a little piece.
