This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum. Completing this BB is part of getting the sand badge in Animal Care.

In this Badge Bit, you will make a lightweight paddock shift chicken coop. This will make paddock shifting your chickens easier. You are doing paddock shift right?

Here are some articles on chickens and chicken coops:
https://permies.com/t/1958/chicken-coops-runs-tractors-paddocks
https://richsoil.com/raising-chickens.jsp
https://permies.com/t/146757/Pasture-chicken-coop
https://permies.com/t/143735/longer-chicken-wire-Raccoon

[b]
To complete this BB, the minimum requirements are:

- coop must provide enough space for your intended number of chickens
- include appropriate number of nesting boxes
- be moveable by one person, without machines
- protect chickens from predators
- no plywood, osb, man-made sheet goods, chemically treated wood or commercial paint (unless it is exceedingly natural/non-toxic)

To document your completion of the BB, provide proof of the following as pics or video (less than two minutes):
- description of the coop you intend to build
- starting materials
- partway through the build
- the final build
- demonstrating that it can be moved by one person
- describe how it provides enough space for your chickens.

Approved submission
I built a 4'x 4' x 2'H coop from Cedar 2x4s, galvanized steel roofing panels & wire mesh. In theory this is large enough for 16 birds with 1 sqft each. I have 4 so it's plenty for me.
Staff note (Mike Haasl) :

I certify this BB complete along with your next air badge in Animal Care

If you have weasels in your area, they could get in though those gaps in the next boxes.  Does the roof latch down?  Raccoons might want to lift that up but I might be making that one up..?  Loved the polka music!

Thanks! The roof does latch. I don't know if I have weasels but I've been thinking about trying to add a flap that can also latch for over the nest box.

Did you just should on me? You should read this tiny ad:
