I was on a job for a week and came home to a smelly frig and freezer. I checked all the frig items and they seemed okay. Must be the freezer. Initially I couldn't find the source, and was hopeful that I was going to get a new refrigerator for Christmas! No such luck -- it was a bag of cut-up onions that were just in a plastic bag rather than freezer-safe container. At least I was motivated to clean out the freezer...
There wasn't much waste, but I fed the forest with non-proteins, and cooked lunch out of the stuff that had thawed while I was cleaning. I tossed the ice cream into the trash (smelled onion-y).
ETA: Photos did not post. Reuploading.
Edited: I used lemon juice and hot water to clean it.
Here is my submission for the Nest - Sand - Alice - Clean Interior of a Freezer BB.
To document the completion of the BB, I have provided the following:
- a before picture of the dirty interior of a freezer
- an action shot of the interior being cleaned
- an after picture of the interior of the freezer
- a description of how waste was handled and what cleaners were used
No food was removed as "waste." No Cleaners were used. Ice removed by sunshine, warm water, and gentle brute force. Then I washed with warm water and elbow grease. And Dried! and Dried!!!
Story: My parents have been installing new flooring in the entire house. They had finished everything except for the laundry room (with washer, dryer, giant fridge, and vertical deep freezer) and asked for my help moving everything several times. I volunteered to take care of the freezer for this bb while my dad focused on the flooring. We moved all the frozen foods to the bathtub and insulated while we took off the door and moved the vertical deep freezer out to the back porch for sunshine and ice removal (see the third photo). Six hours later, with the new flooring installed we brought the freezer back inside and refilled. Check out the new wood floor. :)

I've been clearing out the freezer getting ready for hunting season, and have now reached the point of needing the room. I figure it's a good time to clean. I broke out the apple cider vinegar (because I like the smell) and it proved all I needed to get the job done. Everything left went back into the freezer (a few things earmarked to be cooked in the dog's food) except a stray roll and a bag of breading I use and re-freeze several times that is old enough to pass on. They will feed some worms/ birds.

Cleaned out and went through the chest freezer a while ago. Lots of red from a leaking packet of self-picked raspberries. I chipped the ice off with a spatula, scooped it up and put it in my greywater bucket, and cleaned the remaining gunk out of freezer with plain water, which worked a treat.

I completed this BB at the same time as the Fridge Cleaning BB, using the same method of cleaning (biodegradable soapy water). The food was also handled in the same way, although there was some freezer burnt veggies that ended up in the compost.
