Context:  Burra is over the other side of the room with her computer and mentions something which catches my attention - I might want to read or reply to it.  So I go to permies.com and click forums, and now I have the forum page, with a nice list of buttons down the side for different major topics.  I ask "what forum is that post you were on about just now in ?" but it's kinda problematic to navigate to it.

Let's suppose it was about pigs.  I click on "critters"  and now I'm looking for "pigs" but what I see, immediately, is pictures and links to the best post of the year, month, ever etc. and the list of recent topics in the middle (and maybe the thread I want will be in that list, or it may not)  The list of sub forums in growies is all the way over on the right, the other side of the screen from where I was just focusing.  If you switched the left and right panes over, the sub-forums show up on the left alongside where I just clicked, recent topics still in the middle and the "best of" stuff on the right.  You could have a pop-out list of buttons which matched the style of the main list, for the sub forums but although that would be cute it would be more work and likely not add much functionality, so maybe just switching those panes is enough.

There's a little known feature that allows you to customize the layout on the front page.

In desktop view of https://permies.com/forums at the top right of the page you can choose different views to see what one you like best.

When you found the view you like, you can go to your "my profile" and set the view as default.

Well I have to admit I hadn't seen the change view button, but I have played with it now and it offers some no doubt very handy options.

However, I quite like the default view except that I thought it would work more smoothly withe list of sub forums on the left, alongside the buttons for growies, critters and whatnot.  If you don't happen to have those category buttons turned on it still wouldn't matter if the list of forums was on the left, I feel.
