Best Ground cover to supress weeds uk

Hello permies!

What would you use to suppress general weeds?

Looking for some low ground cover. I was thinking clover.. vetch etc.  Wondering about some flowering ground cover too..  Planning on growing some fruit trees and squash within it come springtime.

I'm tilling an area to remove and hopefully stop bindweed from growing. The patch I tested last spring seems to have worked.. bindweed doesn't like tilled soil, but doing so does release other weeds.
So early spring I want to sow a large swathe with ground cover.

much love

Strawberries are one of my favourite ground covers! Among my fruit trees, I've planted strawberries and chives. They both self-propagate extremely well, and I find both of them quite useful and delicious!

If you want a temporary ground cover, I have had good results from fodder radish.  The nicest is the sort that have edible pods!  They only grow for one year though and are brassica, so you will want to follow with something different.  I sowed some white clover in my poytunnel and it was a bit competitive for my tomatoes, but does make a pretty good cover.  Outside I have a patch of himalayan strawberries which make an excellent ground cover.  A bit too good perhaps.  They don't crop wonderfully welll for me.  I'm based on Skye howeber, so what works for me may not work for you.
