Hello, all.  I have been looking through the book by Paul Wheaton and am inspired to start a permaculture garden/farm thing here on the homestead in western NY.  Currently we have some livestock and a few raised beds.  I've been internet searching for a good book that will lay out how to start a permaculture garden step by step, in addition to the big picture theory side of it all.  Does such a book exist?  This is the one I was considering:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08N3JM5MK/ref=ewc_pr_img_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Hi there and welcome!

Here is a great book thread. Not sure how anyone can pick just one. Enjoy the rabbit hole!

Hi, Melonie!  I actually looked at that thread, but there are so many choices that I thought I would ask for any specific titles related to starting a permaculture garden.  I was hoping not to pick a book too blindly!  Amazon searches are even worse.

Quick, friendly tip. Your title does not draw attention. Give it a better name, there are newbies all the time. Let them know what your looking for :)

I’d highly suggest for both practical and theoretical  Hemenways a Gaia's Garden: A Guide to Home-scale Permaculture: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/136542.Gaia_s_Garden .

    Howdy Sean,

I thought I'd chime in with some recommendations I have found valuable. First, if you don't have it, Mollison's Introduction  to Permaculture has been informative and a good benchmark for me as is his larger more in-depth tome, The Permaculture designer's manual. Personally when I think about gardens, I think annuals, however for food forests I think perennials, as a generalization. I also think Square foot gardening has interesting techniques that are worth the time to read and explore. Finally, The new organic gardener by Coleman is a truly in-depth look at what it takes to grow annuals for for the market gardener. I include this book and think books like this are helpful because I believe they help build the skill sets one needs to proceed with the vast scope of Permaculture. Good Luck! and Have Fun!

So difficult to stop at one (particularly an introductory one...). Mine are UK suggestions simply because those are what I've experienced:
Patrick Whitefield 'Earth Care Manual' if it had to be just one book, or possibly 'Permaculture in Nutshell' by the same author for a simpler introductory book.
Other recommendations:
'The One Straw Revolution' by Masanobu Fukuoka changed my way of thinking I could somehow control the garden.
'Plants for a future' by Ken Fern opened my mind to the possibilities of perennial edibles.
Then any general organic 'how-to' gardening/farming book for your area.

Melonie, good tip! I just edited the title, might be a bit intimidating for a newbie ;-)
