I want to build a quick little outdoor sauna up here in Canada, using just a simple tarp structure. What do I need for the heat source? Charcoal briquettes and rocks? Does anyone have any experience building one?

The rough saunas I have seen use a small steel (not cast iron) wood stove that heats a bunch of rock on top. A dipper is used to pour water on the rocks and make steam.

I would be careful about the rock though. Some forms absorb a lot of moisture and kind of explode when heated the first time.

Search for portable sweat lodges, you may find ideas/inspiration.
