I had a broken handled sling blade and hatchet. The price of new handles is unbelievable - I think it's another way to drive people into buying new. That or it's a sign from God that I need to start a tool handle farm.

Hi, My wife goes to Home Depot to smell the flowers. I go to Home Depot to smell the tools.

Joe, instead of buying how about you make your own foot powered lathe. Then you can put out a sign that says tools repaired. ;)

I've made a conscious decision that I *have* the money, so I'd rather pay the ridiculous price for the replacement handle because there's more embodied energy in the tool. It's an environmental choice.

That said, if I have a tool where the head is in bad shape, but the handle is still good, I salvage the handle for future use.

Also, I usually break the handle where it enters the tool (think shovel). I'm known to accept a shorter handle and reshape the bottom of the remaining wood to fit onto the tool. I find I need different handle lengths for different jobs, so I find uses.
