I've made a conscious decision that I *have* the money, so I'd rather pay the ridiculous price for the replacement handle because there's more embodied
energy in the tool. It's an environmental choice.
That said, if I have a tool where the head is in bad shape, but the handle is still good, I salvage the handle for future use.
Also, I usually break the handle where it enters the tool (think shovel). I'm known to accept a shorter handle and reshape the bottom of the remaining
wood to fit onto the tool. I find I need different handle lengths for different jobs, so I find uses.
