Hi

I am thinking about starting a organic chicken farm and was wondering if anyone knew the minimum amount of chickens and land i would need to start this.

I am aware that you can have 1000 chickens per hectre of land but as I am only just starting off and wanted to know what the minimum amount of land was needed to actually be classed as a chicken farmer.

If someone could help or send me in the right direction of the information I would be very grateful!!

Many Thanks.

For all chicken farming information I recommend "Pastured Poultry Profits" by Joel Salatin. http://www.polyfacefarms.com/2011/07/25/pastured-poultry-profits/

I'm not sure I understand your question regarding how much land you need to be classed a chicken farmer. What qualifies as "farming" under the law varies by local regulation.

I'm not really sure why you need to be classified as a chicken farmer.

If it's for planning permission (I notice you're from the UK) then as I remember the criteria is something like being able to demonstrate that you have a viable agricultural based business capable of supporting you and your family, which used to be around £10,000 per annum when I was attempting to go through the process. I think you'd need an awful lot of chickens if you're going to try to earn that much money. Maybe you could think of diversifying and looking for several different ways of raising money from land?
