This wild grass has huge seeds.

I followed a deer with my camera last week and noticed that his favorite food was this grass. The seeds are about 3 times larger than those marketed as wild rice. This is an uncultivated area in a park with mostly Gary oak. Probably an exotic from Europe since most grasses on Vancouver Island were brought here from Eurasaia.

I tried some of the seed raw. Not bad, not great. I could see using a rake similar to that used for blueberry harvest to gather this stuff.

This stuff seemed nice and clean and it's in a hot, sunny wind swept area. Not that fungus can't grow in these conditions. Also it's every seed rather than scattered about as you'd expect from an infestation in a natural area.

Yes. I'll gather some and send them home with Heidi. It grows on well drained sloped ground. Should work on dad's slopes wherever there is good light.

Jeff is my brother but is living half a continent away, in St Catharines Ontario. (Heidi is our sister and is in Victoria this week. )It's a fruit growing area with peaches, cherries, apricots grapes and others that thrive in this unique pocket of moderate climate along the south shore of Lake Ontario where winter snow is rare.
