we have a large amount of woodland and around our house we are marking large, dead white oaks for this winters firewood and live, small red and white and black oak for shiitakes later in the winter. There are also lots of small hickory (a few very nice shagbarks that we would never cut). I wondered if hickory would work in HK...it decomposes pretty fast compared to oak. We use a little as firewood but have more than we can use either dying or needing to be thinned. Has anyone tried it or can you think of any reason not to?

Last night we had our first whole INCH of rain since the middle of April...and it is in the sixties...wonderful wandering the woods weather.

I can't think of any reason hickory wouldn't work. remember to leave some standing dead trees for wildlife.

We do leave standing dead wood all through the forty acres including the sixty foot hickory just far enough from the house it won't hit it if and when it falls. Our trees have been hit hard every year for awhile...tornados, heavy ice, a late april freeze following an early leaf out, and several periods of drought....and a white oak fungus and red oak borers. We don't even access most of the land for wood....just wander.

as our hickories are only 3 year old babies, not much more than sticks, I really don't know about hugel beds..but it seems that it would work fine..i'm not aware of any allopathy but it might have some, might want to check into that.
