Paul has kindly offered to display a banner for Appropedia. I sent him this banner, but he pointed out that a visitor could get confused, as it looks more like "You're at Appropedia!" when we want it to look like "Appropedia is cool - click here to visit it!"

Now, graphic design and user interface stuff are not my strengths, so if someone could offer some very concrete suggestions - or even modify the banner and repost it here - I'd be really interested, and appreciative. Thanks!

What about this banner? Any feedback?

Note: To see the animation, click on the image and open in new tab.

Thanks Adrien - I like the idea. The capitals in APPROPEDIA feel shouty, but something along those lines could be good!

yeah, I can change that no problem. I was trying to make it as close from the original as possible without spending too much time.

Chris,

here is what I did. Paul suggested removing the animation. Let me know what you think.

The goal would be to get something better eventually, but at least for now we would have something.

Sheesh! I need to take my time and do this right! How can I delete my previous two posts?

Looks great! (I wouldn't worry about deletion - it's all good.)

Sorry for not responding earlier. I got side-tracked with some other people looking at doing a version of the banner, which never worked out. But Alex made it happen, so let's rock!

FWIW. I think Paul's got the right take: Animation has more negatives than positives.

When I'm visiting a site the most hateful thing I can encounter is a video with sound that starts automatically. The second-worst obnoxicity is the animated promo or add that completely distracts from studying the actual content; usually the animation is setup so that the visitor canNOT turn it off. I use Adblock and if I decide to visit that site again I take the time to terminate all animations with extreme prejudice.

If one does use animations I feel that it's only the most brain dead basic courtesy to provide a right-click context item to Stop the animation.

Just my $.02.

I agrees about sound and obnoxious animations. I do believe that subtle animations are very effective. Silent and subtle work.

Thanks Adrien. I appreciate your comments. I try to do the best I can!

Since I didn't know about Appropedia, I appreciate the banner. Mahalo!

but why is it not showing up on this thread?

Is there a rotating set of banners with lots of blank rotations?

Rotating set, yes - not sure how they rotate though.

Blank? Not that I've noticed - do you have an adblocker? (I do, but it seems to let this one through.)

I do have ad-blocker, but, I see banners on lots of other threads, but clicking through about 10 random threads, I see banners of some and not others. Some banners at the top of the page, some top and bottom, some bottom of page only, and some nothing at all. Are all pages linked to show banners? From what I'm seeing (on FireFox) not all pages are set to support for banners. For instance, right now on this reply page, there is no upper banner above the "permies" header & links.

I just did a rather highly-unscientific test, refreshing a page 22 times, and got (not in any kind of order):

Above-Header Banners
2 Geoff Lawton FoodForest DVD
2 Appropedia
1 "Articles"
1 PantryParatus

Lower Banner Bar
1 Weston Banner
1 link to the "pee standing up for women" link

I should mention here ..... how the Appropedia banner caught my eye was it's placement in the lower banner bar, right after I posted a comment in another thread. Once in a great while, I've seen links to other threads, but never a Banner, so I thought it was a new feature in that lower brown bar.

Being a highly-unscientific test on a single compooter screen ..... your results will most-likely vary.

I can't stand all caps, either.  The only thing you really need is a "Visit now" added to the banner,  beside the current text - preferably at a 45 degree angle.   That communicates the 'go here' nature of the banner & the "now" generates an element of urgency.

Also. No animation.  No auto-sound.

No holds barred. And no bars holed. Except this tiny ad:
