I'm looking at a piece of land that seems like an ideal homestead.
The issue I'm having is that it's a (legal, licensed) pot farm. Nothing personal to anybody's sentiments on the issue, but I personally don't really want to be involved in that as a business.
I'm just wondering how possible it might be to buy such a property and cancel that particular operation?
I'm especially concerned about former distributors/users showing up uninvited demanding things, as well as police and lawyers beating down the door.
(Probably most uneasy about the latter... what does that say about the world we live in??)
Anyway, I'm just wondering about the feasibility as well as legal hurdles in doing this?
Has anybody here successfully (or unsuccessfully) done this?
I have done so, but it was small scale and the guy was avidly organic. The prior owner had a gun wielding reputation that would probably have a positive effect on our security. Neighbors have said “how did he afford so much ammo?”. He also had an understanding with the sheriff it seems as he was small scale and much less bad than many other growers they would rather go after. If you are really worried, I would try to contact the sheriff and invite them to come confirm that you are above board and not in that industry. In my case I taught the sheriff’s son in a regenerative ag course at the food forest I helped start, and so they know me already. Your local LEOs would likely say thanks and do nothing around here.
If you can handle the cleanup, and do your due diligence on what that will entail, I would consider it. This green market crash has created one of the only opportunities to “buy low” right now. They also often have a ton of soil lying around to play with once salts are leached out. Good luck!
This is all just my opinion based on a flawed memory
It seems to me that the license would be attached to a business or individual, not the piece of land specifically (except maybe for zoning). When the owner moves on, the license does the same.
I agree that Ben that openness with neighbours, law enforcement, the county, and local news organizations would be good policy. Show them around, open doors. No cannabis being grown, stored, or sold here, folks. Move on.
I think this is an overblown worry. Maybe that's just me. I mean I do work in criminal defense so lots of drug stuffs here. I highly doubt that anyone is going to bother you. Just don't grow pot.
I think it would be easy enough. Just check your seed packs before planting to make sure they don't say "Sub-Arctic Thundermonkey Kush" or whatever and you're good to go!
I get basically all my garden/farming supplies from out of business weed growers. Legalization has been a disaster for the little guys.
