Does anyone know of a good potato onion source? I found a supplier on ebay, but am curious where others have gotten theirs. Thanks!

Also looking. I could only find two companies selling online, both are out of stock.

I did find some excellent catawissa (top sets w/ top sets) walking onions though

Also looking for a good turban garlic if anyone has any suggestions.

I'm wondering what a potato onion is? Does it have another name? and is the walking onion you describe the same as Egyptian onions? Thanks.

Potato onions are perennial multiplying onions.

The Catawissa onion is a type of Egyptian that produces so many top-sets, that even its top-sets have top-sets.

It also has large hollow leaves that you can stuff.

Having done a google search for images of a potato onion (I hadn't heard of them either), they look rather like what we call shallots. Would that be the case?

Very similar; in fact, both potato onions and shallots have the Latin name Allium cepa var. aggregatum.

The only difference being that the former can swell to a diameter between 7.5-10 cm

Kelly Winterton in UT is doing some potato onion breeding work. He may still have bulbs and seed for sale:

Karl, mine have never made seed in 8-10 years. Could be a different variety of potato onion? Has anyone else had seeds form? My bulbs were from Southern Exposure but they seem to be getting bigger. I had some up to three inches.

So potato onions are not the same as walking (Egyptian) onions?

Hi

i think potato onions are Allium Cepa and the walking onions are Allium proliferum.........i'm not sure if they will hybridize.

keep in mind plants in the same species can changed dramatically when domesticated......silver beet, beetroot and sugar beet are all the same species.

Then I better stick with my walking onions -I am growing them first time this year. So far I just ate their greens, which are very good, even if they are larger than most.
