Rocket stoves are great, but not perfect. Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage lost a popular outdoor kitchen gathering space when a piece of wood in the rocket stove surround caught fire suddenly after being used at least a thousand times. These painful conversations are important if they are going to live up to their potential. The builder was kind enough to join me for a long conversation about the fire, what caused it, and how it could have been prevented.
Stay tuned for the full interview.

Is there a pic of the oven and the piece that caught fire?  I couldn't watch the whole video, was it an operational error or a construction issue?

Hey Mike,  It was a construction issue. The formwork was made out of wood and being in direct contact with the stove, after repeated long and hot usage caught fire.
Moral of the story is to leave an air gap between the stove and combustibles that can be monitored.

Thanks for documenting this, Uncle Mud.

I've finally gotten around to posting a more complete article here:
