I am getting ready to put a RMH in a green house that is app. 20x50. I have no idea how big I need to make the RMH. I have electric in the greenhouse so I can circulate the air with a fan. I live in Virginia so the winters are not bad. Can anyone please give me advice or a place that I might research this subject.  I am sure this has been brought up before so links to threads would also be most welcome. We have made small RMH before. This is the first large one we are doing and I done know how to gauge the size of the heater or mass. Thank you in advance.

What is the greenhouse construction? Single pane glass? Plastic? How warm do you need to keep it? Are you trying to just prevent freezing, or have it warm enough that something keeps actively growing through the winter months?

As a data point, I run a 4" J-tube system with a small cob bench in ours. This is enough for me to run a fire for 4-6 hours in the late afternoon and evening, and keep the inside temperature about 5-7 degrees C higher than outside. The glasshouse is 6x3 m, and the floor is dug into the ground to a depth of 75 cm. Single layer 3mm glass, so the thing leaks heat like nobody's business. On the coldest nights we ever get here (-3C) the inside is still a few degrees above freezing, but too cold for tropical plants, so I tend to let those go dormant for the winter by keeping them on the dry side.

Hi Dave;
A 20x50' greenhouse is pretty big.
I'm wondering if you might do better with 2 RMHs, one at each end.
I definitely suggest a batch box over a J tube.   Two 6" batches with brick bells should do the job.
Here is a thread all about greenhouse rmhs
