Hi!
I'm trying to advance on my scavenger hunt but i am blocked on making new threads. It seems most of the time everything has been said on permies, coupled with the fact i'm not a big content creator. So maybee some of you have ideas about this ? because i dont think i'll achieve 100 new threads in the next 10 years haha !

The "Meaningless Drivel Forum" is an excellent place to start new threads to build up your thread count.

Do you have a favorite cartoon character like maybe Charlie Brown?

https://permies.com/f/12/md

What about starting some threads in the Music or Art Forum?

Why not share a music video of your favorite musician or song?

Do you have a favorite artist you would like to share with the forum?

https://permies.com/f/230/music

https://permies.com/f/13/art

Maybe a thread on your favorite scenic spots in your country?

Do you have a hobby?  Share some photos based around that.

Tell us about your homestead.

What kind of animals do you raise?

Start a thread about something like "Post photos of your homestead".

I am looking forward to what others would like to see threads on.

Start a new thread for any particular problem you're trying to solve. Even if you don't need advice, logging what you do here will help hundreds of users who view but don't post! And you may get some surprisingly good ideas from our active forum members!

Start a thread about plant IDs on your property or locality.

Start a thread for any project you're working on.

Start an organizational thread that combines links to resources you have found useful.

Edit: phone input typo

Post script: by the way, this thread is great too!

This thread is pointing to a local weakness that I've been thinking about too. I think this place is better when we go find an old thread and contribute to that, but the scavenger hunts incentivize, even if only subtly, the fracturing of the discussion into new posts (which staff might then go and fold together, requiring work on their part).

Yesterday I saw a new poster post to several older threads with a question.

Each time, I thought "it would get more responses if this had been a new thread."

Another reason to start a new thread is because if the question does not get any answers then it will be in "Zero Replies" and if I can contribute something, I wait several days then I bump the thread to see if I can get some other folks to help.

I keep looking at that 100 threads requirement for that scavenger hunt.   I'm fairly active here but STILL over a decade I've only started 31 threads (feels like more).

Personally,   I was thinking the requirement jumping from 25 to 100 seemed excessive to me.

Yesterday I commented on a thread (so I thought) through email notifications to alert me to posts.   Turns out, it was 2 different very similar threads and then my responses didn't make sense in the context of a single thread.   I should have paid closer attention to the subject heading instead of just the subject of it.

Share a decision you have to make and ask for input. …. even if you know the answer.   I have often received a new perspective I had not considered.   More than once I have learned that I had been doing things the hard way for decades.  Equally, I have often learned that I was correct , but there were risks involved I had not considered.

I also use this site for input on ideas I have received from people not on this site.

Some of my favorites are when people document the projects that they're working on. It helps me see how they troubleshoot and find solutions that I wouldn't have thought of.

Or "Can I see your ____" so that there's a thread with whole compilations, such as post photos of your chicken coops, paddock set-up, cold frames, etc. It helps to have lots of ideas in one spot.

Sharing projects you've done or are working on is a great way to generate content.

This is one of my favourite forums https://permies.com/f/69/projects

Another thing I like to do:

I get an idea in my head - or more like a question.  What if I made such and such?  Almost like a wish list of things I want to do one day.   So I make a thread exploring the idea like a thought experiment.  Like this one about the quilted housecoat.  I'm still about 3 years away from needing a new housecoat, but every time I find something nifty about it, I add it to the thread.  That way I can find it again if I do make the project and being a public thread, people add their own experiences and thoughts so I can get ideas that I wouldn't have thought about on my own.

I figure I'm not the only one asking these questions or thinking about these topics.  By posting it here on permies, it provides a resource others can access and maybe even google might like the thread and people concerned with keeping warm this summer might find that thread, then poke about permies and learn that permaculture is a thing.  (that's pretty much the path I took).

So even if I never do the project, it still helps make the world a better place.

recipe threads.

I used to keep a blog for my recipes, but I found posting recipes on permies is a lot more fun when I encourage other people to share their recipes and then I get ideas for the future.

Today I'm making bread pudding following my normal recipe, but instead trying out the pressure cooker.  I don't know how it will go so I haven't decided yet if I will add it to the chirstams boiled pudding pressure cooker thread or maybe start a new bread pudding thread so I can hear all about the crazy ways people cook it around the world (I hear some places even cook it in the oven!  That's so outside my comfort zone as bread pudding is a moist custard to soften stale bread, wouldn't it go crunchy?  Then again, it might be the bestest thing ever... starting a thread would be a good way to find out.)

I also really love having a thread full of all sorts of good answers to a question. I've been known to, on occasion, go and merge a bunch of old threads on the same subject into one comprehensive thread on the subject, like this thread: Cat Litter--What to use and how to compost it. If you find a bunch of threads on the same subject and think it'd make sense to merge them, you could probably make a post about it (like in the Pollinator's only forum, or in Tinkering) and maybe a moderator with some free time will push the magic buttons! A lot of us like having things nicely organized around here, so chances might be pretty good that someone will take a stab at it.

Another thing you can do is make the thread...and then you'll likely find other threads on the same subject. If you do, you can make a reply in the thread with links to other related threads. I've done that quite a few times. The first one that comes to mind is the Staple Foods thread. I was learning so much through all the threads, and so wanted to list them all in one place for people to more easily find the info.

That leads me to another type of thread I often end up making: ones with links or lists full of info! Like Raven, I like to stash my research here on permies to make it a lot easier to find it (like my Toilet Paper Castle and the Favorite Preschool Aged books about nature). And, sometimes I find myself answering the same question over and over, and so just make a thread that answers the question to refer people to, like my Edible Plants for Wet/Shady Areas. Sometimes I spot a bunch of really great threads, and so make a thread that indexes those thread, like List of Dr. RedHawk's Epic Soil Series Threads.

One thing you can do to get inspired for thread-making ideas is to click on the profile of someone who's made lots of good threads, and see what they've done. Pearl Sutton has made 300+ threads, with lots about growing specific varieties of food, managing finances, some silly threads, life management, neat things she's found, etc,  It looks like I've made like 600+ threads. It seems like a lot of of them were SKIP/PEP badge threads, some were silly things, others were projects or questions I had, and a lot were helping out permies by making digital market threads. (that's another idea for a thread! If you have something you've made--digital things are easiest, but you can sell physical things here on permies, too--you can make a Digital Market thread selling it. It doesn't cost anything to list something there, and it might make some money!).

Another type of thread you could make is a Book Review thread! Got some books that you love (or hate, or have constructive criticism about) that you don't see on the book review grid? Go ahead and make a Summary Thread for it! (here's a tutorial on how to do that) You can actually make rewiew threads for:

  • Books
  • Seed & Plant Sources
  • DVD/Films
  • Gear
  • Critter Breeders

  • Think of all the knowledge you can stash here on permies in 100 threads!

Recently I've realized for related topics Permies is more useful for me than browser bookmarks, which I almost never use... because I can just make index threads like Nicole suggests, or use my private organizer thread which is available to me anywhere the net is.

I like to give my threads a slightly unique and easy to remember name that is easy to remember and pops up quickly with predictive input when I start typing it into the browser search bar.

Technology has become a lot more useful with keywords and such these days. Permies is too.

Slightly off-beat, but totally on-topic thread titles also get a lot of attention without being click-bait.

I admit,  I'll ask questions I already know the answer to because permies could use a thread on that topic or that it is trending and would bring some Googlelove, when I don't have time to write a tutorial.
