Training seedling goji to be a tree?

I am wondering how others prune their goji berry bushes. Mine currently are 6 ft wide and five ft tall with lots of sticks to hold the long arching branches off the ground. Otherwise they will layer and take over the whole area.

I saw some picture of a goji with single upright stem that the whole plant looks like a weeping mulberry (hop homestead). I guess that it grows from a long straight cutting and any lower growths are removed.

I started some black goji berry seeds this year and wanted to try the idea of training one in the tree form. It already has the bushy look but I hold the main shoot upright to be the single trunk in the future. I am not sure whether to prune off the side branches now or not. Other seedlings are left to grow in a natural form.

What's your experience growing goji berry from seed?

It's not working. The tendency to branch is too strong. I removed the bottom branches but they quickly grow back. The plant started to flower couple weeks ago so i just let it be. Nevertheless it is a vigorous bush and i am excited to have some berries later.

i did successfully grow a single-trunked goji for a few years (and yes, they’ll do what they can to keep sending out shoots anywhere they can - but goji is actually edible, so most of those shoots went in my scrambled eggs at breakfast times). after a few years that trunk just died off and i haven’t tried to recreate the situation since.

Hi, Judy, welcome to the forum!

Some plants are easily propagated by sticking them in the soil or in a pail of water.

I am not familiar with goji propagation so If I were given some sticks I would try both ways just to see what happens.

Maybe someone who knows the answer will speak up and let us know how to propagate Goji.
I'm tired of walking, and will rest for a minute and grow some wheels. This is the promise of this tiny ad:
